Advanced Diplomas

Set at a substantial post-fellowship level, North and Midlands School of Music Advanced Diplomas combine practical and theory assessments and demand planning, study, work and commitment of the highest possible callibre.

Four assessments are offered:

  • AdvDipNMSM(CT) - Advanced Diploma in Choral or Choir Training.
  • AdvDipNMSM(MT) - Advanced Diploma in Music Teaching.
  • AdvDipNMSM(Litt) - Advanced Diploma in Research for the NMSM.
  • AdvDipNMSM(Accomp) - Advanced Diploma in Accompaniment.

Candidates must hold an examined Licentiateship or above (or music degree) from the NMSM or a recognised establishment in order to take an Advanced Diploma

Advanced Diploma in Choral or Choir Training

  • List training objectives for next six months
  • Write five essays chosen from a list of 12 titles (submit within one month)
  • 650 to 800 words each, excluding quotes and references None
     
    Option Two

  • Propose a choir training project. Once it has been approved by the NMSM examinations committee, develop it.

  • NB: Examiners may wish to set one or two additional questions to clarify specific points arising from work.

    Advanced Diploma in Music Teaching

    Practical requirements

  • Two pupils - 1/2 hour each (consecutively)
  • Preparatory exercises and/or scales
  • Introducing a new piece - teach part or all to the pupil.
  • Rehearse a known piece for imminent performance

  • Propose and describe a teaching innovation, giving examples and relating it to current professional practice

    Advanced Diploma in Research for the NMSM

    This diploma is available to any member who, following a prescribed course of study at a recognised academic institution, can use their work to improve the efficiency of the NMSM's operational framework or its assessment procedures and post-assessment reports.

    Work undertaken must be of a high academic standard. Proposals and ideas to develop current processes and frameworks are welcome, provided they do not compromise the system currently in place. Minor alterations to the existing system or infrastructure will not be considered for this award.

    Requirements
  • Submissions should be supported by references
  • Research submissions should be 18,000-25,000 words, including references and should follow NMSM style
  • A comprehensive outline of work (1,000 words) should be submitted prior to starting the research
  • Once agreed by the Academic Registrar, work should be completed within two years
  • Proposals are not guaranteed to be implemented if an Advanced Diploma is issued
  • The research will remain the intellectual property of the author, but the NMSM shall have free rights to use it in part or in full.
  • The candidate retains the right to publish, improve or carry out further work on this research without the express permission of the NMSM
